To become a creative writer isn’t as difficult as it might seem. Even though some people in academic or technical writing might not agree with me on this.

Well, maybe it’s actually easier to write procedures of processes that have been laid down, than creating a new story out of nothing.

Creative writing comes naturally to some people, while others have to acquire the art through one means or another. Irrespective of which category you belong to, what matters more is that you are reading this blog post for a reason. And I won’t miss to chip in that if you have the interest to make a switch to creative writing or this is your first attempt at writing, then you should know that to hone your writing skill in creative writing should be one of your first main focus as you stride your baby steps.

Because in as much as creative writing is about writing from your imaginations and thoughts, it still follows the rules of writing. Yes, in creative writing there is freedom for wandering of thought quite alright, but this doesn’t mean you should ignore the necessary principles of writing.

Creative writing is any form of writing that comes freely from the imaginative senses of a writer. This could be a poem, prose, drama, or even a song.

A creative writer is one who writes out of nothing other than his imaginations and creativity while abiding by the principles of writing. 

Qualities of a Creative Writer

A creative writer exudes the below qualities;

• Organisational Skills: As a creative writer you need to be time conscious, proactive and organised. Have a writing plan and have enough self discipline to stick to it.

• Creative: A creative writer who misses this quality should have ‘creative’ deleted from his title. Being creative and applying it in your writing is what sets you apart from other types of writers.

• Good Command of Grammar: A creative writer needs to have a good command of grammar to produce authoritative, readable and interesting pieces.

• Open Minded & Flexible: In this field you need to be open minded and flexible to learn, improve, receive and handle criticisms maturely as well.

• Deep Thinking: A creative writer thinks beyond what is and transcends to what isn’t visible to others in order to create new dimensions to things – Innovations. This is how a creative writer is able to create characters and settings that feel real and at the same time different and unique.

How to Become a Creative Writer

To become a creative writer, you should adopt the below guide;

• Awaken your imaginative and creative senses.

• Learn to see beyond what others see.

• Form the habit of thinking deeply.

• Be innovative. Be able to modify what is in existence into what is not in existence.

• Know your audience. Always research or get information on who your intended audience are to guide your tone and style.

• Hone your writing skills. If you are into writing at all, creative writing or not, honing your writing skill is one of the fundamental things you shouldn’t overlook. If your writing skill is poor, you would drive off your readers before they even make out what your pieces is about.

• Write more often. Your writing improves by practice. The more you write, the better your skill becomes. Try to write on a new topic each day.

• Have a writing plan. This will help you plan better and practice more.

• Brainstorm and create several writing prompts, this will save you from writer’s block.

• Join creative writing clubs if you can access any. This will greatly help you learn and improve.

• Take creative writing courses, virtual or live.

• Have a mentor in the creative niche to be your second eye.

• Find good creative books and make reading a hobby. Read works of other creatives and learn from their delivery styles, tone, languages and choice of words.

• Learn to write almost like you talk. Don’t sound like a text book…that’s boring. Imagine opening a novel to read only to discover that instead of sounding like a story, it had a tone of an educational textbook.

• Learn about plagiarism so you don’t fall victim to it in your writing. Always give credit to whom credit is due.

• Build your self confidence. Suppress any atom of inferiority complex. There are great books on how to break the chains of inferiority complex. Find at least one and read.
