2015/2016 RISING STAR WRITING COMPETITION
We are happy to announce the winners of the just concluded maiden edition of The Rising Star Writing Competition, flagged off on December 3, 2015 in Lagos. As you are aware, Rising Star Writing Competition & Awards is an annual children creative writing competition and awards organiSed by The Writers Corner in collaboration with Vuvuzela Communications Limited to help develop children’s creative thinking and writing skills while rewarding the winning entries with various prizes. The entries were either a poem or a short story exploring the theme “Our Troubled Planet” with 200 and 500 word -limit for a poem and short story respectively.

The awards/prizes shall be presented to the winners in their various schools and at their “Assembly Grounds”. This is to enable us celebrate the award-winning children in the presence of their family, friends, teachers and mates. This option will also help us touch base with our primary constituency (schools/school children), strategically deepen our marketing and engineer greater participation in the next edition.
While congratulating all the winners, we want to appreciate all the children that entered for the competition. In participating, you are all winners. We also want to use this opportunity to thank our Sponsors, Greenlife Pharmaceuticals for their financial support. We are also grateful to Tripplesea Group, the owners/marketers of Bluegate Electronics in Nigeria, for ensuring that all winners go home with valuable gifts – a Television set and a UPS for the 1st Prize Winners in both categories and a UPS for all other winners. We are also grateful to Chelis Bookazine for their book donations to all the winners. We are encouraged and remain grateful to them.
I wish to encourage schools to get appropriate Literacy Curriculum for their pupils and students. It was surprising that many students do not know the difference between a short story and an essay, as observed in the received entries. So many entries were disqualified as a result of this hence the use of Primary/Secondary categorization instead of the earlier advertised age-based Junior/Senior categorization.
